Na de zomervakantie van 1981 begonnen twee Engelsen met het uitgeven van - door hun zelf geschreven- reisgidsen. In 1982 kwam de eerste Rough Guide to Greece op de markt. Sindsdien beschrijven de reisgidsen van Rough Guides meer dan 200 bestemmingen over de hele wereld. De reisgidsen van Rough Guide zijn vaak voorzien van betere achtergrondinformatie van bijvoorbeeld de gidsen van Lonely Planet.
